We have plans – but they have other plans. We have dreams – but theirs are different. We expect one thing and they deliver exactly the unexpected. Sometimes we’re just moving in opposite directions.
I’ve been a parent long enough to know that I can’t change my children. They entered this world with a personality all their own, tastes and preferences and tendencies and strengths and weaknesses absolutely innate to their being. They are who they are, regardless of what I expected or planned for.
But the freedom in this is to realize that our role as parents isn’t to change, but to equip. We’re here to teach them how to live and how to love, how to persevere, how to apologize, how to be strong and yet soft, how to forgive, how to be honest, and to find joy in the things that matter and how to serve those around them. Our job is to help them become the healthiest versions of the selves that they were born with, and to embrace the ways that they are both alike us and also wildly, unexpectedly different.
Sometimes it’s easy, sometimes it’s hard. But it’s always, always a sacred, wonderful, life-giving work.
This session was photographed in my studio. If a cozy, simple, minimalistic session is something you’d be interested in, I’d love to chat! I offer newborn, maternity, and motherhood sessions in my studio.
