I never felt beautiful growing new life. Or strong. I didn’t feel powerful or wonderful. Blessed, certainly. But despite my gratefulness for my ability to grow and birth babies, I mostly felt sick, exhausted, anxious, and in pain.
Pregnancy is a gift, but the experience of it varies wildly. I’ve known women for whom it was a joyful and wonderful time. For myself, it was the most miserable I have ever felt in my life. Though I was ‘healthy’ on paper and had no risky issues, I endured unrelenting migraines during my third and fourth pregnancies, and even my second pregnancy (significantly easier than those two) was terrible enough that I thought for a long time that I could never endure it again.
I just want mothers to know that no matter their childbearing journey, they are magical. They are lovely and wonderful and beautiful. Whether they gain 20 pounds or 80, are left marked by stretch marks or not, struggle to get pregnant, get pregnant right on schedule, or are expecting a surprise baby that leaves them reeling a bit, whether they grow their babies or bring them home through adoption – all of it is good. It’s not all enjoyable or easy, of course. But it’s good.
There’s no shame in struggling with the process, and no less beauty in it.
