This is my very oldest friend: we’ve been friends since we were in elementary school, and I’ve only known my own family longer. And in fact, she was part of why I loved photography, and maybe part of what led me to this career.
In elementary school, we formed our own very unofficial photography club: The Clickin’ Chicks. It was made up of the two of us, and two of our younger sisters. We took a lot of photos, and our parents were so generous as to develop so many silly rolls of film. Our photos always involved costumes – old fashioned ladies, angels, you name it – and interesting, pastel makeup. We had a blast.
As we got older, we left our little club behind, but not our enjoyment of photography (or costumes). As young teens, The Lord of the Rings series was wildly popular, so we made ourselves elf costumes from thrifted pieces, and then photographed each other riding bareback on my friend’s horses. We were clearly not in the cool kids club, but we were having a much better time!
When I got engaged at all of 20 and had no interest in hiring anyone (ironic, right!), she took our engagement photos, many of them in her backyard. And when I was a mom of two testing the waters of a photography business, I borrowed her really nice camera til I was able to invest in my own.
And by then, I’d honestly forgotten about our elementary school club, or how obsessed we really were with taking photos. It didn’t look like a straightforward path when I was actually walking it, because it wasn’t – it was full of twists and turns and a bachelors degree in computer science and a job at a startup in another state and more big moves and babies and big life questions. It was only in hindsight that I could see the threads being woven together, the way that I really was so suited for this work, and the gift of friendships that shape our lives.
Most of life doesn’t look straightforward and sensible in the moment, but those times when we can look back and say, ‘Oh, I get it now’ are such a beautiful gift. And I am so grateful.

I’m Hannah. I’m a photographer and educator based in Boise, Idaho, where I live with my favorite guy ever and our four little ones.
