There is a tendency to think of a newborn session as being about the baby — which makes complete sense, because a brand new baby is a pretty compelling subject. But some of my favorite images from newborn sessions have very little to do with the baby at all, and everything to do with the family that just completely transformed around them.
Because that is what actually happened. Your whole family just changed. The way your older kids look at this new person, the way your partner looks at you, the way you look at all of them in this brand new configuration — that is a completely unique moment in your family’s story that will never exist in quite this way again. The first days and weeks at home with a new baby are exhausting and tender and overwhelming and so full of love, and that is worth documenting just as much as ten fingers and ten toes.
A newborn session is really a family session that happens to have a brand new baby in it. It is a record of who you all were at the exact moment everything shifted — how little the big sibling still was, how fresh and raw and happy and tired the parents looked, how your home felt in those early weeks when everyone was still figuring out this new normal together.
