If you’ve never done a professional photo session before, you are not alone — and I actually think pregnancy is one of the most natural and meaningful times to do it for the first time. Here’s why.
There is something about expecting a baby that has a way of shifting your perspective on what is worth documenting. Suddenly the moments feel more significant, the time feels more fleeting, and the instinct to hold onto things before they change kicks in in a way it maybe never has before. That feeling is real, and it is worth listening to.
A maternity session is also such a beautiful way to document your family right at this in-between moment — before everything shifts and your family grows by one more. If you have older kids at home, including them in your maternity session captures something really specific and really fleeting — the last little stretch of life before they become a big sibling, while the anticipation is still so fresh and new. That dynamic is something you genuinely cannot recreate later.
Most of my clients who come in feeling nervous and unsure about the whole process are surprised by how quickly that goes away once we get started, and even more surprised by how much they love their images when they see them. And once you have those images and you realize what professional photos actually feel like — the light, the intentionality, the difference between a snapshot and something you genuinely want on your wall — it tends to be the thing that makes families want to keep documenting every season after that.
Maternity photos really are great entryway into professional family photos!
