Boise Maternity Photographer // Family Photography by Hannah Mann
Some sessions just stick with you, and my maternity session with the Thompson family is one I’ve come back to in my mind many many times since last year.
They came in with three kids already in tow and one more on the way, and the energy between them was exactly what you’d expect — full and sweet and bright. That’s the kind of family session I love most.
Shortly after their session, their daughter Violet — who was six at the time — was diagnosed with leukemia. What followed was one of the hardest things a family can go through. She went into septic shock, endured two emergency abdominal surgeries, and continued chemotherapy through all of it, even while recovering from abdominal surgery. Her doctors described her situation as uncharted territory. There were moments where things looked really, really bleak.
And then, this past Easter, Violet walked across the St. Luke’s Sky Bridge in a sparkly pink sequin dress, surrounded by the care team that fought for her, and went home. She’s seven now, back at school, and doing well.
I think about this families like the Thompsons when people ask me why photographs matter. You just never know what’s ahead — and having images from an ordinary, beautiful moment in your life before everything changes? That’s not a small thing.
