Let me just say this upfront: if you have little kids and you’ve been putting off family photos because you’re convinced your toddler will refuse to cooperate — I photograph little kids all the time, and the “uncooperative” ones almost always give me my favorite shots of the whole session.
Here’s what I’ve found after years of working with families: little kids don’t perform for the camera, and that is actually a really good thing. They run and they wander and they fixate on a bug they found on the ground, and in between all of that, there are these completely unguarded moments of connection — a toddler reaching up for a parent’s hand, a baby laughing at absolutely nothing, siblings doing whatever weird thing they do together that makes your whole family lose it. That is the stuff I’m after, and you genuinely cannot manufacture it.
Outdoor sessions give little kids room to just be themselves, which is where the magic happens. Good light, some open space, and a family that shows up willing to let the session be a little unpredictable — that combination produces images that actually feel like your life right now, in the best possible way.
