There’s this funny thing that happens when your kids get a little older — somewhere between the toddler years and the teenage years, the world sort of stops reminding you to document your family. Newborn sessions and milestone photos are everywhere when your kids are babies, and then suddenly your littlest isn’t so little anymore and you realize it’s been a few years since you’ve had real photos taken, and somehow that snuck up on you completely.
I want to make a case for motherhood sessions with big kids, because I think they are genuinely underrated and incredibly worth doing.
Something shifts when kids get a little older and more themselves — they have opinions and humor and these whole little personalities that are so fun to capture. They’re old enough to actually interact with you in a real way during a session, to make you laugh, to say something completely unexpected that turns into the best frame of the whole day. And the relationship between a mom and her big kids — that specific version of it, right now, before they grow out of it — is just as worth documenting as any other season.
Motherhood looks different at every stage, and every stage deserves photographs. You don’t have to have a baby or a toddler to book a session — you just have to want to remember this exact version of your family, right now, before it changes again.
