One of the most common things I hear from new parents before a newborn session is some version of “I hope the baby cooperates” — and I always want to reassure them that there is genuinely no wrong way for a newborn to show up to their own session.
Here’s what I mean by that. A peaceful, curled-up, fast asleep newborn is absolutely dreamy to photograph — all that softness and stillness, those tiny details you want to freeze in time before they disappear. But an awake and alert baby? Those sessions are also some of my favorites. The wide eyes, the little expressions, the way they seem to be taking in the whole world for the first time — that is just as beautiful and just as worth capturing, and produces images that are completely different in the best possible way.
Indoor newborn sessions have a really natural, warm quality to them that I love. Whether we’re working with the light in your own home or in a studio setting, the environment feels intimate and calm, which is exactly the right energy for a brand new baby and a family that is still figuring out their new normal together.
So if you’re in the planning stages and stressing about whether your baby will sleep through the session — don’t. We will make it work, whatever that looks like on the day.
